Quilting 101 - Teaching Church Ladies

I was asked by my friend from church if I would teach her and others from church to quilt. They had a specific goal in mind: to make a quilt they could sell at a silent auction to benefit a friend who is dying of cancer and drowning in medical bills. Of course, how could I refuse? So today (Oct 11, 2006) we turned my house into a sewing studio (a.k.a Val's Sweat Shop) and we cranked out most of a quilt top in just one day. My "students" did extremely well and have every reason to be proud of their work. :)

We chose to do a variation of a Rail Fence block, called 4-Rail, by Terry of Quilting Passion. She graciously gave us permission to use her pattern to make this quilt. This is a very easy block to do, can be done with strip piecing, and is very forgiving... perfect for beginners! :)

Here is Inetha learning all about Frogging... "Rip it, rip it rip it!" To be honest, there wasn't a lot of Frogging to be done on this project. Yes, I did have to rip out some of mine because I got carried away and sewed two blocks together wrong, but hey, I just got to demonstrate that every quilter has to Frog every now and then. :)

Tracy is sewing one of her strip sets while Allie prepares to press a seam in the background. Tracy was so funny, she was being extremely careful in her sewing at first. She was so worried she'd do something wrong, but before long she was zipping along with everyone else. I knew she could do it!

Inetha (facing camera) and Tracy busily working on sewing their strip sets.

Tracy is hard at work, pressing her seams. She sure seems happy to be pressing, think maybe we have a quilting addict in the making? Allie is also hard at work, cranking out strip sets like mad.

Inetha is also pressing her seams. I think we may get her hooked on quilting too... look at how happy she is to be using an iron! :)

And here is Allie, pressing one of her searms. She was fast, cranking out strip sets one right after another. Go Allie! She is another of my "students", she has already completed two quilts and is working on a third. I think I have a quilting addict in the making!

Here is the quilt top, almost finished... it just needs borders. I laid the borders next to one side so you can get an idea of what it will look like. The quilt will be fairly big when done, around 78" x 78".

Here are Tracy and Inetha, proudly showing off their work. Not bad for a day's hard work, we got a quilt top nearly completed! Go us! :)

Here is the quilt on my frame, being quilted with a stars and loops pantograph.

Here is another view of the quilt on the frame. The blue variegated thread we picked is really looking nice on this quilt, and it looks awesome on the light-blue backing!

The quilt is complete! Here we are, with the finished quilt, all washed, labeled, and ready to go to auction. The auction will be next Friday, on November 3rd, so watch for an update when we find out how much it sold for.
